Indicates that the same person performs two actions at the same time.

Examples

父は新聞を読みながらコーヒーを飲んでいる。

My father is drinking coffee while reading the newspaper.

妹は音楽を聞きながら宿題をしています。

My younger sister is doing her homework while listening to music.

窓から景色を見ながら昼ご飯を食べた。

I ate lunch while looking at the scenery through the window.

Structure: Attach ながら to a verb's ます stem to connect two actions performed simultaneously by the same subject.
Basic usage: In 妹は音楽を聞きながら宿題をしています。, the younger sister listens to music while doing homework.

The subjects of the two actions
- In 私は音楽を聞きながら料理する, the listener and the cook are the same person. Express different people's simultaneous actions separately, as in 私が料理している間、妹は本を読む.
Focus on the following action
- 歩きながら話す centers on talking while walking, while 話しながら歩く centers on walking while talking. The final verb, such as 話した or 歩いた, determines the sentence's tense.
