Indicates that one thing changes naturally along with a change in another.

Examples

春が近づくにつれて、日が長くなる。

As spring approaches, the days grow longer.

年齢を重ねるにつれて、早起きになった。

As I grew older, I started getting up earlier.

町が発展するにつれて、人口も増えた。

As the town developed, its population also grew.

Structure: Add につれて to a form such as the dictionary form of a change verb to describe another change developing along with it.
Basic usage: 春が近づくにつれて、日が長くなる。 connects approaching spring with lengthening days.

Linked development and simple sequence
- 町が発展するにつれて人口が増える presents development and population growth as linked processes. This differs in focus from an action after an event, as in 町が発展してから引っ越した.
Not a direction to follow
- 説明書に従って作る describes following the instructions in a manual. Do not replace it with change-linking につれて to express that meaning.
