友人 and 知人: friends and acquaintances
Describe a relationship without assigning an exact degree of closeness.
Friendship
友人 (ゆうじん) means friend. 「友人と旅行しました」 says the speaker traveled with a friend.
「学生時代の友人に会いました」 means meeting a friend from one's school days. 学生時代の identifies the period of that friendship.
Someone one knows
知人 (ちじん) means an acquaintance. 「知人に仕事を紹介してもらいました」 says an acquaintance helped by introducing a job.
知人 can identify someone one knows without calling them a friend. It does not necessarily imply a poor relationship.
Separating relationships from actions
「友人ではありませんが、顔は知っています」 means the person is not a friend, but the speaker recognizes their face. It does not mean knowing nothing about them.
「知人の紹介で会いました」 says the meeting happened through an acquaintance's introduction. Separate the introducer from the person newly met.
Does calling someone 知人 necessarily mean disliking them?
Show the answer and why
No. It identifies an acquaintance and does not settle the speaker's feelings toward them.
