床 and 天井: floors and ceilings

Describe the bottom and top of a room and read object locations accurately.

The floor

床 (ゆか) means floor. 「床に座りました」 means sitting on the floor.

「床を拭きました」 says the floor was wiped. Distinguish に for the location from を for the cleaning target.

The ceiling

天井 (てんじょう) means ceiling. 「天井に照明があります」 locates a light on the ceiling.

「天井が高い部屋です」 describes a room with a high ceiling. It does not establish a large floor area.

The basis of a measurement

「床から天井まで測りました」 means measuring from floor to ceiling. The two nouns set the measurement's endpoints.

「床ではなく、天井を見てください」 asks someone to look at the ceiling rather than the floor. Separate the rejected target from the requested one.

Does a high ceiling necessarily imply a large floor area?

Show the answer and why
