呼ぶ: calling or inviting someone and using a name

Read a conditional request to call and an invitation home, then compare the object and name in a separately labeled author-written naming example.

A request to call under a condition

「用事が終わったら私を呼ぶように伝えた。」 describes telling someone to call the speaker when the errand is finished. 私を identifies whom to call, and 用事が終わったら supplies the condition.

A conveyed request is distinct from a completed call. The sentence alone does not establish that the errand ended or that someone called the speaker.

Inviting a friend home

「友達を家に呼んで、一緒に夕飯を作った。」 describes inviting a friend home and making dinner together. 友達を identifies the invited person, and 家に identifies the destination.

Unlike the conditional request, this sentence describes past actions involving the friend and dinner. Read the action, place, and tense together with 呼ぶ.

The name in an author-written example

Author-written example: 「私たちはこの部屋を『作業室』と呼んでいる。」 means “We call this room the workroom.” This sentence was written for the naming comparison and is separate from the supplied word examples.

In this author-written example, この部屋を identifies the thing being named, and 『作業室』と identifies its name. This differs from asking a person to come, but を or と alone does not determine the meaning of every sentence with 呼ぶ.

In the author-written example 「私たちはこの部屋を『作業室』と呼んでいる。」, what is connected to を and と, and is anyone being called to come?

Show the answer and why

この部屋を identifies the room being named, and 『作業室』と gives its name. The author-written example calls the room the workroom; it does not describe summoning a person. Keep that naming use separate from the calling and inviting uses in the supplied word examples.
