野菜 and 果物: food names and quantity expressions
Use vegetables and fruit in shopping and meal contexts, distinguishing kinds from pieces.
Buying or growing vegetables
野菜 (やさい) means vegetables. 「市場で野菜を買いました」 says that the speaker bought vegetables at the market.
「庭で野菜を育てています」 describes growing vegetables in the garden. The subject of 育てる is the person tending them.
Eating or choosing fruit
果物 (くだもの) means fruit. 「朝、果物を食べました」 says that the speaker ate fruit in the morning.
「季節の果物を選びました」 means choosing seasonal fruit. The general noun does not itself specify a single piece or multiple pieces.
