売上 and 利益: sales and profit after costs

Compare hypothetical sales with monetary profit after all stated costs, without transferring a large-sales assessment to profit.

The amount from sales

売上, read うりあげ, means sales or the sales amount. reports recording this month’s sales in a ledger at month end.

The sales record alone does not give the costs incurred. A large 売上 does not automatically establish a large 利益.

The monetary profit defined in this example

利益, read りえき, means profit or benefit. defines profit here as sales minus all costs.

, profit in this hypothetical example is two thousand yen. Ten thousand is total sales, not the result after costs.

Benefit in other contexts

reports using part of the shop’s profit for local activities. Keep part distinct from all the profit.

, 利益 can refer more broadly to one’s interests or benefit. Do not restrict every use to this example’s money calculation.

With sales of ten thousand yen and all costs of eight thousand yen in this example, is profit also ten thousand?

Show the answer and why

No. Under the stated calculation, profit is two thousand yen. Distinguish sales from the result after costs.
