浮かぶ: floating petals and a kitchen brought to mind

Compare petals on a pond with a scent recalling a grandmother's kitchen in 浮かぶ. Distinguish a floating state from an evoked memory without making the kitchen move or treating it as a current visit.

Petals floating on the pond

浮かぶ (うかぶ) can describe floating on water. 「池に白い花びらが浮かんでいる。」 means “White flower petals float on the pond.” 白い花びら identifies what is floating, and 池に gives the location. 浮かんでいる presents their state on the water.

Do not replace that state with only the instant when the petals rise upward. The sentence focuses on their being afloat on the pond. It does not supply a petal count, the time they fell onto the water, or their eventual direction of travel.

A scent brings a remembered kitchen to mind

「この香りを嗅ぐと祖母の台所が浮かぶ。」 means “This scent brings my grandmother's kitchen to mind.” この香りを嗅ぐと gives the occasion for remembering, and 祖母の台所 names the scene that comes to mind. Here the subject is a remembered place rather than an object on water.

The kitchen's 浮かぶ does not mean that a room or building physically moves. Smelling the scent evokes the grandmother's kitchen in memory. The sentence does not establish that the speaker is currently visiting the kitchen or observing it on site.

Use the place or the sensory occasion as a clue

The petals have the pond as their location, while the kitchen is associated with smelling a scent. These clues distinguish an existing floating state from the evocation of a scene in memory. Do not give the remembered kitchen the same physical state as the petals.

The memory sentence is not an explanation of how to memorize or recite something. It describes a particular scent bringing a familiar kitchen to mind. Identify what floats or what is recalled, then preserve the petals' state and the memory's sensory occasion separately.

In 「この香りを嗅ぐと祖母の台所が浮かぶ。」, is the kitchen physically floating on water?

Show the answer and why

No. The scent brings the memory of the kitchen to mind. That remembered scene differs from the physical state of petals floating on the pond.
