付き添う: the person attending and the person examined

Read the mother accompanying the grandfather and the speaker staying beside an anxious-looking friend. Distinguish an escort from the person examined, and accompaniment from a medical diagnosis.

The mother accompanying the grandfather

「母が診察を受ける祖父に付き添った。」 (My mother accompanied my grandfather to his examination.)

The grandfather is the person receiving the examination, and the mother accompanies him. Keep the person described by 付き添った distinct from the person receiving the examination.

Accompanying an anxious-looking friend

「不安そうな友人に病院まで付き添う。」 (I accompany my anxious-looking friend to the hospital and stay nearby.)

不安そうな describes the friend as appearing anxious. Accompanying the friend and staying nearby does not itself establish a medical diagnosis or completed treatment.

Being beside someone and receiving an examination

In the first scene the mother accompanied the grandfather; in the second the speaker accompanies a friend. Read who stays beside whom and who receives the examination.

Here 付き添う describes accompanying or attending to someone. Being an escort does not by itself make that person the patient or establish a nursing qualification.

When the mother 付き添った the grandfather receiving an examination, was the mother the person examined?

Show the answer and why

No. The grandfather is the person examined, and the mother accompanied him. Keep the escort's role distinct from that of the person receiving the examination.
