〜という + noun: connect a name or a message
Introduce unfamiliar names and attach the content of a message or thought to a noun. Read the noun that follows, too.
Introduce something by name
「青空」という店で昼ご飯を食べました。 means having lunch at a shop called Aozora. Put という between the name and the category 店.
田中さんという人から電話がありました。 introduces a call from someone named Tanaka. If the listener already knows the person, the name alone may be enough.
Attach the content of information
明日は休みだという連絡が来ました。 reports receiving a message saying that tomorrow is a day off. The entire clause 明日は休みだ gives the message’s content.
This quoted-content construction keeps だ in 休みだ. Do not divide it into word-sized pieces as if it were identical to the naming phrase 「青空」という店.
Read through to the following noun
日本で働きたいという夢があります。 describes a dream of working in Japan. It does not establish that someone actually spoke those words aloud.
When you see という, identify a name or a content clause, then connect it to 人, 店, 話, or 夢. Do not translate every occurrence as a separate act of saying.
Quick check: What is the book’s name in 「ひかり」という本を借りました?
Show the answer and why
ひかり. という connects that name to the category 本. The borrowing action is expressed by 借りました.
