〜てみる: try something and see
Use てみる to try an action. Separate wanting to try, actually trying, and the result of the attempt.
Attach it to the te-form
Add みる after the te-form: 読む → 読んでみる and 作る → 作ってみる. means you will try using a new dictionary.
Conjugate the final みる to make 使ってみました or 使ってみたい. This trial meaning is normally written みる rather than 見る.
Keep the attempt separate from its result
says you tried memorizing something with this method. It does not yet tell us how well it worked.
adds that you soon forgot it. Do not read てみた as proof of success or mastery.
Express a wish or suggest an experiment
expresses a wish to try wearing a kimono once. It does not mean you have already had that experience.
suggests trying another example together. Practice choosing てみます for your own trial and てみましょう for a shared suggestion.
Quick check: In 読んでみましたが、よく分かりませんでした, did the person try reading it?
Show the answer and why
Yes. They tried reading it but did not understand it well. てみました gives the attempt; 分かりませんでした gives its result.
