進む and 戻る: continuing along a path and returning to an earlier point
Compare going farther along a road with returning to a fork, separating a return destination from walking backward.
Proceeding farther along a route
進む, read すすむ, means proceeding or advancing. says that going a little farther along this road brings a bridge into view.
says that the line is moving forward slowly. It does not say that everyone left the line at once.
Returning to a previous point
戻る, read もどる, means returning to an earlier place or point. says that someone returned as far as the fork. まで gives the extent of the return.
says that someone will return to reception to retrieve a forgotten item. 取りに gives the purpose, rather than a completed retrieval.
A return destination and body orientation
says that someone went a little farther but returned because they took the wrong route. It states the sequence and reason.
says that someone walked back while facing forward. Returning to an earlier point does not require walking backward.
Does 受付へ戻る mean walking backward toward reception?
Show the answer and why
That does not follow. It means returning to reception, where the person was earlier. Body orientation and walking posture need separate information.
