寸法 and 規格: drawing dimensions and conformity conditions
Compare a board’s actual dimension with its drawing, without extending agreement in one length to all specification requirements.
The dimension being measured
寸法, read すんぽう, means dimensions. 届いた板は図面の寸法より二センチ短かった。 says that the delivered board was two centimeters shorter than the drawing dimension.
If the drawing specifies thirty centimeters, the board is twenty-eight centimeters long. Distinguish the two-centimeter difference from its actual length.
The specified conformity conditions
規格, read きかく, means a specification or standard. 箱の大きさが指定された規格に合っている。 says that the box’s size conforms to the specified standard.
A specification supplies context-defined requirements. Checking one size item does not establish matching material or every other dimension.
Align the items compared
長さは図面と一致しますが、厚さはまだ確認していません。 says that length matches the drawing but thickness has not yet been checked.
どの寸法を確認しましたか。 asks which dimension was checked. Match the checked items to the required conditions before deciding conformity.
If length matches the drawing but thickness has not been checked, have all dimensional requirements been checked?
Show the answer and why
No. Only agreement in length has been established. Other required items, including thickness, need separate checks.
