袖 and 襟: sleeves and collars
Separate a garment from its parts and read alteration or cleaning scope.
A sleeve for the arm
袖 (そで) means sleeve. 「袖をまくりました」 means rolling up the sleeves.
「この服は袖が長いです」 says this garment has long sleeves. It does not evaluate every part as oversized.
The collar around the neck
襟 (えり) means collar. 「襟を直しました」 means straightening the collar.
「襟の汚れを落としました」 says dirt was removed from the collar. The cleaning target is a specific garment part.
Checking the alteration target
「袖だけ短くしてください」 asks for only the sleeves to be shortened. だけ limits the alteration.
「襟は同じですが、袖の形が違います」 says the collars match but the sleeve shapes differ. Keep the part-specific comparisons separate.
Does 「袖だけ短くしてください」 request shortening the whole garment?
Show the answer and why
