取材 and 報告: gathering material and reporting content

Identify who gathers information, its source, reported content, and recipient to distinguish gathering information from conveying it.

Gathering information from people and places

「記者が朝市を訪れ、店主たちを取材した。」 identifies a reporter visiting a morning market and interviewing its merchants. The reporter gathers information, and the merchants are the subjects of the interview.

「記事を書く前に現場で十分な取材を重ねた。」 describes extensive information gathering on site before writing an article. Read the place and information-gathering role without adding publication of the article.

Reporting content to a recipient

「調査の結果を班長に報告しました。」 describes reporting investigation results to the team leader. The results are the content, and 班長に identifies the recipient.

「詳しい報告は明日の会議で聞く予定だ。」 states a plan to hear a detailed report at tomorrow’s meeting. Preserve the planned setting and listening rather than claiming the report was already heard.

Different roles for information

取材 focuses on obtaining material from people or places, while 報告 focuses on conveying findings or progress to someone. One person can do both, but the separate examples do not establish a single shared actor or event.

Compare whom the reporter interviewed with what was reported to whom. Identify the information source in 取材 and the content and recipient in 報告.

In the morning-market 取材 example and the results 報告 example, who supplies information, what is conveyed, and who receives it?

Show the answer and why

The merchants are the information sources in the interview example. Investigation results are the content reported to the team leader in the reporting example. These roles distinguish gathering from conveying information without making the two sentences consecutive actions by the same reporter.
