商店街 and 市場: shopping streets and markets

Distinguish a shopping district from a market and connect the reading of 市場 to a concrete trading place.

A street of shops

商店街, read しょうてんがい, means a shopping street or district. means walking through that district.

means buying something at a bakery in the shopping district. The specific purchase location is the bakery, not the entire district.

A physical market

市場, read いちば, is a concrete place where goods are bought and sold. means buying fish at a market in the morning.

proposes meeting at the market entrance. It neither proposes a trade nor reports a meeting already completed.

Reading and purpose

市場 also has the reading しじょう, used for such meanings as an economic market. The linked word in this guide is いちば, the concrete marketplace.

says that someone went to the market but bought nothing. Do not equate a visit with a purchase.
