商談 and 交渉: commercial discussion and adjusting conditions

Compare checking an estimate before a business meeting with negotiation over delivery dates or construction hours. Read the commercial or condition-adjustment focus and its progress.

Preparing for a business discussion and agreeing

商談 (しょうだん) means a commercial discussion or business negotiation. 「午後の商談に備えて見積書をもう一度確認した。」 reports checking the estimate again for the afternoon meeting. The check is completed; concluding the discussion is not stated.

「互いの条件が折り合い、商談は予定より早くまとまった。」 reports the discussion concluding earlier than planned when both sides' conditions matched. This example includes the agreement and conclusion.

Negotiating delivery dates and construction hours

交渉 (こうしょう) means negotiation. 「両社は納期を巡って交渉を続けた。」 reports the two companies continuing negotiations over the delivery date. The condition is identified, but continuation does not state a settlement.

「住民との交渉がまとまり、工事の時間が変更された。」 reports negotiations with residents concluding and the construction hours changing. It identifies the other party and the timing condition changed after agreement.

Commercial focus and adjustment of conditions

商談 focuses on commercial discussion; 交渉 focuses on adjusting conditions or interests. Both perspectives can apply when a commercial relationship involves negotiating a delivery date.

Preparing an estimate, continuing negotiations, and reaching an agreement are different states. Read the topic and progress rather than fixing the words as informal versus formal procedures.

How do the estimate check for an afternoon 商談 and the construction-hour change after residents' 交渉 differ?

Show the answer and why

The first prepares for a commercial discussion; the second reports an agreed adjustment of construction-time conditions with residents. Their focus and their preparation-versus-settlement states differ.
