飼育 and 栽培: animal care and choosing a plant that can be grown

Compare raising fish and recording animal care with growing vegetables and choosing a suitable plant. Identify the animal or plant, the ongoing activities, and choice based on cultivation being possible.

Raising fish and recording animal care

飼育(しいく) covers raising animals, with breeding also among its meanings. (We raise small fish in the school aquarium.) 小魚を identifies the fish raised, and 学校の水槽で gives the setting. 飼育している describes the activity of raising them.

(I recorded the care of the animals in a notebook every morning.) What was entered in the notebook every morning was a record of animal care. The meaning breeding does not turn the examples of raising and care records into successful reproduction or young being born.

Vegetables being grown and a plant chosen

栽培(さいばい) means cultivation or growing. (My grandmother grows seasonal vegetables in the yard.) 祖母 is the person growing, 庭で identifies the yard, and 季節の野菜を identifies the seasonal vegetables. The focus is the current growing activity.

(We chose a plant that can be grown in a place with little sunlight.) 栽培できる gives the possibility of cultivation, and 選んだ gives the completed choice. Choosing a plant that can grow with little sunlight does not report actual planting or a completed harvest.

The target and stage of the action

The care examples concern small fish and animal care records. The cultivation examples concern seasonal vegetables and a chosen plant. Read the target together with recording or choosing to distinguish these activities.

飼育している and 栽培している describe raising or growing. 栽培できる植物を選んだ describes a choice based on possibility. Neither successful breeding nor planting or harvest is added, and one plant's condition does not become a rule for every plant.

report completed breeding or a harvest?
