選抜 and 代表: selecting people and representing a group

Read two selected representatives per school year, one representative per class, and joint practice while keeping selection scope separate from a representative role.

選抜 (せんばつ): the selection and its scope

「各学年から代表を二人ずつ選抜した。」 (“We selected two representatives from each grade.”) Keep two people attached to each school year. It does not mean only two were selected from the entire school.

「選抜された選手が合同練習に参加した。」 (“The selected athletes participated in joint practice.”) The selected athletes participated in joint practice. Distinguish choosing them from their later activity without adding a championship or an unstated representative status.

代表 (だいひょう): the group represented

「各クラスから一人ずつ代表を選んだ。」 (“We chose one representative from each class.”) The one-person scope applies to each class in this sentence. The word 代表 itself does not impose a universal rule of one person for every group.

「彼女は町を代表して全国大会に出場する。」 (“She will represent the town in the national competition.”) Read the relationship with the town and the upcoming competition. A planned entry as its representative does not report an entry already completed or a win.

Separate selection numbers from representation

選抜 focuses on choosing people or those selected; 代表 focuses on the group someone represents. A selected person can be a representative, but the words do not always provide identical information.

Two per year and one per class belong to their own examples. Do not transfer the selection method or numbers into a representative sentence that does not state them.

Does selecting two people per school year mean only two people were selected from the whole school?

Show the answer and why

No. Each school year is the stated scope. Read the one-representative-per-class example with its own number and group rather than combining the selection methods.
