生活 and 日常: living and ordinary life in photographs
Read life in a new city alongside ordinary life after a trip and in a town photo collection. Follow what the photographs record rather than inventing a photographer’s daily schedule.
The setting and purpose of living
「新しい町での生活にも少しずつ慣れてきました。」 means “I am gradually getting used to life in the new city.” 生活 names life in the new city as the speaker gradually becomes used to it. The change is developing rather than being described as fully finished.
「規則正しい生活を送るため、毎朝同じ時刻に起きます。」 means “I wake at the same time every morning to maintain a regular routine.” Waking at the same time is linked to the speaker’s aim of maintaining a regular life. The example gives a personal purpose rather than a required wake-up time for everyone.
Everyday life returned to and recorded
「旅を終えて静かな日常に戻った。」 means “I returned to my quiet everyday life after the trip.” The speaker returned to quiet ordinary life after the trip. 日常 here does not name a particular timetable to be followed each day.
「この写真集は町の何気ない日常を写している。」 means “This photo collection captures ordinary daily life in the town.” The photo collection records ordinary life in the town. 町の何気ない日常 is the subject matter captured in the photographs rather than a list of the photographer’s daily actions.
Identify what the photo collection captures
この写真集 identifies the collection doing the recording, while 町の何気ない日常 identifies what it captures. Keeping those roles distinct avoids adding the photographer’s waking habits or shooting schedule.
Both 生活 and 日常 can concern ordinary living. These examples distinguish life in an environment, a personal aim for that life, a return to ordinary life, and life captured by photographs. They do not divide the nouns into exclusive kinds of living.
What does 町の何気ない日常 refer to in the photo-collection example, and how is it different from a photographer’s daily schedule?
Show the answer and why
It is the town’s ordinary life captured in the photo collection. The phrase identifies the subject matter of the photographs, not the photographer’s daily timetable or waking habits.
