成果 and 実績: obtained results and a record of achievement
Compare results from practice or research with a sales or research record, reading what was gained and what supports the record.
Results obtained with 成果
成果 (せいか) refers to results obtained from an activity. The example 「毎日の練習の成果が試合に表れた。」 is translated as “The results of daily practice were evident in the game.” Read where the results of practice became evident.
The example 「調査の成果を報告書にまとめた。」 is translated as “We summarized the survey findings in a report.” Separate the findings of a survey from the act of organizing them in a report.
A record of work with 実績
実績 (じっせき) refers to a record of actual work or achievement. The example 「過去の販売実績を表にまとめた。」 is translated as “We organized past sales performance in a table.” Past sales performance is organized in a table. Distinguish this record of actual sales from results obtained through another activity.
The example 「長年の研究実績が評価され、彼女は表彰された。」 is translated as “She received an award in recognition of her long record of research achievements.” Keep the relationship between recognition of research achievements and the award, without making every record receive such an award.
The result and evidence of achievement
成果 focuses on what an activity produced; 実績 focuses on evidence of work or achievement. Results can also come from past activities, so present versus past does not create an exclusive division.
Read performance results and survey findings separately from sales records and recognized research achievements. A record alone does not make every result good or every assessment identical.
What differs between organizing survey 成果 in a report and having research 実績 recognized?
Show the answer and why
The first concerns the findings obtained and their organization in a report. The second concerns recognized research achievements and the resulting award. Distinguish the result from its record and assessment without imposing a present-result versus past-total rule.
