誠意 and 好意: sincerity in a response and kindness toward someone

Compare 誠意 in apologies and good-faith responses with 好意 in helpful kindness or affectionate feelings. Read their possible overlap without adding forgiveness, compensation, or a resolved problem.

Sincerity shown in an apology or response

誠意 (せいい) concerns sincerity or good faith. 「謝罪の言葉だけでなく行動で誠意を示した。」 means “They showed sincerity through actions as well as words of apology.” The focus is the attitude shown alongside the apology; the exact actions are not specified.

「相手の誠意ある対応に感謝した。」 means “I appreciated the other person's good-faith response.” A sincere response and appreciation of it are stated. Appreciation alone does not establish forgiveness, compensation, or resolution of the problem.

Kindness that helps and feelings toward a person

好意 (こうい) includes kindness and affection. 「見知らぬ人の好意で重い荷物を運べた。」 means “A stranger's kindness allowed me to move the heavy luggage.” Here, kindness makes help possible; an apology or an attempt to show sincerity through an apology is not part of the stated scene.

「彼女は同僚に密かな好意を抱いている。」 means “She secretly has affectionate feelings for her colleague.” This example focuses on feelings toward someone rather than an act of help. It does not establish that the colleague returns those feelings or that the affection must be romantic.

Sincerity and goodwill can occur together

For 誠意, consider the sincerity of an apology or response; for 好意, consider kindness or positive feelings toward someone. A sincere response can also show kindness, so the two are not mutually exclusive. Kindness does not always specifically concern sincerity in an apology.

In the luggage example, focus on the kindness that allowed the person to move it. In an apology example, separate the sincerity shown from forgiveness or a resolved problem. Sincerity and positive feelings do not supply results that the sentence leaves unstated.

Can the stranger's help with heavy luggage be read as an example of sincerity conveyed through an apology?

Show the answer and why

The example states that 好意, the stranger's kindness, allowed the luggage to be moved. It does not mention an apology. 誠意 and 好意 can overlap in other contexts, but the stated focus here is helpful kindness.
