Photographing a Garden and Checking Footage

Compare photographing a garden and a building's photography prohibition with checking security footage and watching a trip video. Distinguish the shooting activity, footage, and viewers.

Photographing a garden and a building's prohibition

撮影 (さつえい) means photography or filming. — “I photographed the garden in the soft morning light.” The reported action is photographing the garden in soft morning light.

— “Photography is prohibited inside the building.” The stated prohibition applies inside the building, 館内. It is not extended to every location or trip video. The garden photography example also does not restrict the word 撮影 to still photography in every context.

Footage checked or watched

映像 (えいぞう) means video or footage. — “The person in charge checked the security camera footage.” The person in charge is the subject checking, and the security camera footage is the object checked.

— “I watched the video from the trip with my family.” This example reports watching a trip video with family. Watching the footage and shooting it are separate actions; being a viewer does not by itself identify someone as its camera operator.

Activity and footage as distinct roles

The 撮影 examples identify what was photographed or where photography is prohibited. The 映像 examples identify the footage and the people checking or watching it.

In the security-camera sentence, follow The person's checking action is stated, but a personal filming action is not. Distinguish camera operator and reviewer using the information actually given.

establish that the person in charge personally filmed that footage?

Show the answer and why

No. It identifies security camera footage as the object and the person in charge as the one who checked it. Keep the activity of 撮影 distinct from checking 映像, without equating the person checking footage with its camera operator.
