Ceremony attendance and broader attendance
Compare attendance at a wedding or ceremony with attendance at a meeting or class. Read the event attended without imposing a passive-versus-active division.
Being present at a ceremony
参列 concerns attendance at a ceremony. reports the family attending a relative’s wedding. The wedding is the event attended.
says ceremony attendees wrote their names at the entrance. The attendee label and the action of writing names are both stated.
Attendance at meetings and classes
出席 means attendance or participation. says everyone is expected to attend tomorrow’s meeting. A plan is separate from completed attendance.
says the teacher distributed the materials after taking class attendance. Taking attendance came before distribution.
Identify the occasion attended
These examples connect 参列 with a wedding or ceremony and 出席 with a meeting or class. Ceremony attendance can also belong to the broader idea of attendance, so the meanings need not be exclusive.
参列 does not necessarily mean passive attendance, nor does 出席 necessarily mean active involvement. The event and the actions or plans actually stated provide the useful distinction.
How do the occasions attended differ between the 参列 examples and the 出席 examples?
Show the answer and why
