才能 and 適性: developing talent and suitability for a role

Compare guidance that nurtures talent with assessing suitability for work, without making talent exclusively innate or suitability a general ability score.

Expressing and developing 才能

才能 (さいのう) refers to talent in doing something. The example 「彼女には物語を作る豊かな才能があります。」 is translated as “She has a great talent for creating stories.” Identify the field in which the talent is expressed.

The example 「若い選手の才能を伸ばすには良い指導が必要です。」 is translated as “Good coaching is needed to develop the young athlete's talent.” Good coaching is needed to develop the young athlete's talent. This condition does not report completed coaching or development, nor make talent unchangeable.

Suitability for a role with 適性

適性 (てきせい) refers to suitability for a task or role. The example 「面談で本人の希望と仕事への適性を確認した。」 is translated as “The interview examined the person's wishes and aptitude for the work.” Read the work for which someone is suited rather than turning suitability into a context-free ability score.

The example 「彼女は指導者としての適性を少しずつ示している。」 is translated as “She is gradually showing an aptitude for leadership.” She is gradually showing aptitude for leadership. That developing evidence does not report that she has already been appointed to a leadership position.

Assess talent and role fit together

才能 emphasizes talent that can be expressed or nurtured; 適性 emphasizes the fit between a person and particular work. Having talent does not establish suitability for every role.

A person may develop talent and assess suitability. Identify the field and the role instead of imposing an innate-versus-learned division.

What different target is assessed when guidance nurtures talent and someone examines suitability for work?

Show the answer and why

Guidance concerns developing 才能 in a field. Examining 適性 concerns the fit between a person and particular work or a role. Talent alone does not establish suitability for all work, and the words do not create an exclusive innate-versus-learned division.
