夫 and 妻: introducing a spouse

Describe a spousal relationship and distinguish relationship nouns from action roles.

Talking about a husband

夫 (おっと) means husband. 「夫は料理が好きです」 says the speaker's husband likes cooking.

「夫と駅で待ち合わせます」 arranges to meet the husband at the station. と marks the person to meet.

Talking about a wife

妻 (つま) means wife. 「妻は今、出かけています」 says the speaker's wife is out at present.

「妻に予定を聞きました」 means asking the wife about the schedule. Replacing に with が would make her the person who asked.

Introduction versus direct address

「私の夫です」 and 「私の妻です」 introduce one's spouse. They do not serve the same purpose as the name or term used to address that person directly.

「夫婦で旅行しました」 says the couple traveled together. 夫婦 (ふうふ) refers to the married pair as a unit.

Who was asked the question in 「妻に予定を聞きました」?

Show the answer and why
