表 and 裏: front and back surfaces
Compare 表 read おもて with 裏 and distinguish another reading of 表.
The front side
表 (おもて) is the front or outward-facing side. 「紙の表に名前を書きました」 means writing a name on the front of the paper. Its markings or intended use determine which side is the front.
「表を上にして置いてください」 asks for the front side to be placed facing up. 上 gives the orientation, while 表 identifies the side.
The reverse side
裏 (うら) is the reverse side. 「裏も見てください」 asks someone to check the back as well. も includes the reverse side in addition to the front.
「店の裏に駐車場があります」 says there is a parking lot behind the shop. 裏 can locate something behind a building as well as identify an object's reverse side.
Another reading of the same character
If 「表を作りました」 refers to a table organizing data, 表 is read ひょう. The front side おもて and data table ひょう share a character but differ in reading and meaning; check the object and verb.
「裏に説明があります」 says there are instructions on the reverse side. It does not imply an intention to hide them; do not add that motive to a physical location.
What does 「裏返してください」 ask someone to do?
Show the answer and why
It asks someone to turn the object over to expose the other side. Which side becomes visible depends on the starting position.
