入浴 and 浴びる: bathing, sunlight, and muddy water
Follow bathing as an activity and the people or objects receiving sunlight or muddy water. Read the reason for going onto the balcony and the bicycle affected by a splash.
Bathing and a personal choice
「運動の後にゆっくり入浴した。」 means “I took a leisurely bath after exercising.” 入浴した names the bathing activity after exercise. The sentence concerns taking a bath rather than receiving sunlight or muddy water.
「食事の直後は入浴を避けることにしている。」 means “I avoid bathing immediately after meals.” The speaker describes a personal choice about bathing immediately after meals. This example states what the speaker does; it does not supply a general bathing rule.
Sunlight for a person and muddy water on a bicycle
「朝の光を浴びるため、ベランダに出て背伸びをした。」 means “I stepped onto the balcony and stretched in the morning sunlight.” In the Japanese sentence, 朝の光を浴びるため gives the purpose of stepping onto the balcony. This example’s English translation describes stretching in the sunlight. The relevant object is morning light rather than a bath.
「泥水を浴びた自転車を庭で洗った。」 means “I washed the bicycle in the yard after it was splashed with muddy water.” The bicycle is the object affected by muddy water. 浴びた describes 自転車, and the main action is washing that bicycle in the yard.
Track the activity and what was affected
入浴 names bathing in the exercise example. In the muddy-water example, 浴びる describes what happened to the bicycle before it was washed. These examples use an activity name and an affected object in different ways.
The two 浴びる examples involve sunlight and muddy water, with a person and a bicycle as the affected subjects. Following both the substance and its recipient keeps the reading tied to the sentence rather than to a bathing location.
What was affected by 浴びた in the muddy-water example, and what was washed in the yard?
Show the answer and why
The bicycle fills both roles. 泥水を浴びた describes the bicycle splashed with muddy water, and the main action is washing it in the yard. The sentence does not describe a person taking a bath.
