延びる and 伸びる: deadlines, departure, grass and a line

Match the two spellings of のびる to four stated subjects, preserving actual grass growth and the planned extension of the new line.

延びる with a deadline and a departure

「材料の到着が遅れて工事の期限が延びた。」 (The construction deadline was extended because the materials arrived late.) 延びる (のびる) describes the deadline being extended here. Late arrival of the materials is the reason, and the construction deadline is the object of the reported change.

「雨の影響で出発が翌朝まで延びることになった。」 (The departure was postponed until the next morning because of the rain.) This use of 延びる concerns departure being postponed until the next morning. Both examples concern schedules, but retain the particular subject and the changed timing stated in each.

伸びる with grass and a new line

「庭の草が雨の後で急に伸びた。」 (The grass in the yard grew suddenly after the rain.) 伸びる is also read のびる. The grass in the yard actually grew suddenly after the rain. The subject 草 identifies growth rather than a schedule change.

「新しい路線が海辺の町まで伸びる予定だ。」 (The new line is scheduled to extend to the seaside town.) The new line is scheduled to extend to the seaside town. 予定だ keeps the extension as a plan; it does not report completed construction or service to that town.

Match the shared reading to each subject

In these four sentences, 延びる is used for the deadline and departure, while 伸びる is used for grass and the line. Identify the named subject alongside the spelling instead of relying on the shared reading のびる alone.

Grass growth is reported as an actual past event; the line extension remains scheduled. These particular examples illustrate the subject-based distinction without making physical length a universal rule for every use of 伸.

Which subjects use 延びる and which use 伸びる in the four examples?

Show the answer and why
