Different Bell Timbres and a Word's Nuance
Compare a soft violin tone and two similarly shaped bells with different timbres alongside a drum resonating in a hall and a word's slightly lonely nuance. Read sound qualities, spatial resonance, and verbal nuance.
A soft tone and two similarly shaped bells
音色 (ねいろ) means tone or timbre. — “The old violin produced a soft tone.” The old violin produced a tone described as soft.
— “The two bells have different timbres despite their similar shapes.” 形が似ていても expresses a contrast despite similar shapes. These two bells have different timbres, so similarity of shape does not make their sound qualities identical in this sentence.
Resonance in a space and nuance in a word
響き (ひびき) means resonance or nuance. — “The sound of the drum resonated through the large hall.” The drum's sound resonated through the large hall in the reported past event.
— “This word has a slightly lonely nuance.” Here the object is a word and its nuance, rather than a sound spreading through a space. 少し寂しい marks a slightly lonely nuance, without identifying the speaker's actual emotions or intentions.
Sound quality and verbal nuance
The 音色 examples concern a soft tone and the different timbres of two similarly shaped bells. The 響き examples concern spatial resonance and a word's nuance, illustrating two senses of that noun.
Keep the shape-and-timbre comparison within these two bells rather than extending it to every bell. Likewise, read the word's 響き as verbal nuance rather than a literal bell sound, following the object and scope of each description.
say that similarly shaped bells have the same timbre?
Show the answer and why
No. It contrasts the similar shapes of these two bells with their different timbres. , 響き is a word's nuance, distinct from a literal bell sound or a confirmation of the speaker's emotions.
