見本 and 試供品: a reference sample and a sample provided for trial

Compare samples showing color or a writing model with samples supplied for trial. Read their roles and separate deciding whether to buy from completed purchase.

Use a sample as a reference

見本, read みほん, means sample or example. 布の見本を窓辺で見て色を確かめた。 says that someone looked at the fabric sample by the window and checked its color.

The sample is a reference for checking color. Read what it shows without turning this scene into an already completed fabric purchase.

Receive a sample for trial

試供品, read しきょうひん, means a sample provided for trial. 店頭で化粧品の試供品を受け取った。 says that someone received a cosmetics sample at the store.

Receiving the sample is completed. Receipt alone does not establish that it has been tried or that the full product has been purchased.

Refer to a model and decide whether to buy

書き方の見本を参考に申込書へ記入した。 says that someone filled in the application by referring to a writing example. Filling it in is completed; submission needs separate information.

試供品を使ってから購入するか決める。 says that someone will decide whether to buy after trying the sample. Preserve that order without establishing a purchase, and allow that a 見本 may also be tried in context.

How do 見本 and 試供品 focus differently on a sample's role?

Show the answer and why

見本 focuses on providing a reference such as color, form, or a writing model. 試供品 focuses on provision for trial. Usability alone does not make all samples mutually exclusive categories.
