祭り and 行事: festivals and scheduled events
Distinguish festivals from the broader category of events, and schedules from preparation and performance.
The word for a festival
祭り, read まつり, means a festival or ritual celebration. means going to the town festival.
means helping prepare for the festival. It does not mean the festival is already over.
The broader word for an event
行事, read ぎょうじ, is an event held for a purpose or as part of a schedule. means participating in a school event.
means checking next month's events. It does not mean attending them.
Category and change
A 祭り can be described as a local 行事. Do not turn every school event or examination briefing into a 祭り, however.
says that the event was postponed, not canceled. Distinguish a schedule change from a decision not to hold it.
