教材 and 教科書: video course material and a textbook

Compare a video used in class and age-suited resources sought at a library with opening or receiving a textbook. Distinguish learning use, the named book, and the reported action.

Learning resources and a particular textbook

教材 (きょうざい) means teaching or course material, while 教科書 (きょうかしょ) means a textbook. A video used in class and a textbook opened before class highlight learning use and the particular book involved.

Material format alone does not restrict 教材 to paper or exclude textbooks from learning materials. Identify what was used in class and which book was opened or received.

A classroom video and a resource search

「先生は動画を教材として授業に取り入れた。」 — “The teacher used a video as course material.” The video has a stated learning use in the class. This is a concrete example of 教材 with a format other than a printed book.

「子どもの年齢に合う教材を図書館で探した。」 — “I looked for learning materials suited to the child's age at the library.” 探した reports looking for suitable resources. It does not establish that the sought material was obtained or that the child succeeded in learning from it.

Opening a book and receiving a mathematics text

「授業が始まる前に教科書を開いた。」 — “I opened my textbook before class began.” The reported action is opening the textbook before class. Opening it does not establish that its contents were fully read or understood.

「兄から古い数学の教科書をもらった。」 — “My older brother gave me an old mathematics textbook.” The received object is an old mathematics textbook, given by an older brother. Receiving the book does not report completed mathematics study or understanding of the whole textbook.

What do the video 教材 and the 教科書 opened before class show about learning resources and a particular book?

Show the answer and why

The video shows that 教材 is not restricted to printed books. 教科書 identifies the textbook opened for class. These examples neither exclude textbooks from learning materials nor establish full understanding from opening a book.
