空間 and 場所: creating space and choosing a place

Compare space created by moving a shelf with a place specified for luggage, distinguishing the completed action from the request.

Space created by changing the arrangement

空間(くうかん) means space. 「棚を動かして窓辺に広い空間を作った。」 describes moving a shelf and creating a large space by the window. 動かして and 作った connect the change in arrangement with the space created.

The sentence states that the shelf was moved and space was created. It does not state what activity used that space or that the entire room was tidied.

A place selected for a purpose

場所(ばしょ) means a place or location. 「荷物は通行の邪魔にならない場所へ置いてください。」 asks for the luggage to be put where it will not obstruct traffic. 通行の邪魔にならない supplies the condition for choosing the place.

場所へ identifies where the luggage is to be put, and 置いてください expresses a request. Moving the luggage or securing passage is not reported as a completed result.

Creating space and specifying a place

The 空間 example concerns usable space created by changing an arrangement. The 場所 example concerns a place suitable for putting luggage. One area can be described from both perspectives.

The words are not divided into invariably three-dimensional 空間 and flat 場所. The distinction here concerns what space was created and what a place was selected for.

Which example reports completed space creation, and which asks for the luggage to be put somewhere?

Show the answer and why

空間を作った reports that space was created. 場所へ置いてください requests placement in the specified place; it does not report that the luggage was already put there.
