今週 and 来週: this week's and next week's plans

Read the reference week, day modifiers, and rescheduled events.

The current week

今週 (こんしゅう) means the week containing the present day. 「今週は忙しいです」 says the speaker is busy this week.

「今週の金曜日に会います」 schedules a meeting for Friday this week. の links the week to the weekday.

Moving to next week

来週 (らいしゅう) means the week after this one. 「会議は来週に延期されました」 says the meeting was postponed until next week.

「来週から授業が始まります」 says classes begin next week. It does not say the entire course ends within that week.

Checking the reference week

「今週ではなく、来週です」 corrects this week to next week. It does not identify both weeks.

「来週の何曜日ですか」 asks which day of next week. 来週 alone identifies neither a specific weekday nor exactly seven days from now.

Does 来週 always mean exactly seven days from today?

Show the answer and why

No. It identifies next week. Confirm a weekday or date for the exact day.
