米 and 御飯: uncooked rice, cooked rice, and meals

Distinguish rice as an ingredient from cooked rice and the meal meaning of ご飯.

Washing and buying rice

米 (こめ) refers to rice. 「米を洗ってから炊きます」 places washing the rice before cooking it.

「米を五キロ買いました」 says that the speaker bought five kilograms of rice. It does not count servings or meals.

Eating cooked rice

御飯 (ごはん), also written ご飯, can mean cooked rice. 「茶碗にご飯をよそいます」 means serving rice into a rice bowl.

「ご飯をもう少しください」 can request a little more rice. The dining context identifies what the speaker wants more of.

Referring to a whole meal

「一緒にご飯を食べませんか」 can invite someone to have a meal together. It does not require rice to be on the menu.

「今日の朝ご飯はパンでした」 says that today's breakfast was bread. ご飯 in 朝ご飯 refers to the meal.
