克服 and 解消: overcoming a difficulty and resolving a condition

Compare fear or a technical challenge with lack of exercise or a misunderstanding, separating actions taken for a purpose from completed results.

Overcoming difficulty with 克服

克服 (こくふく) refers to overcoming a difficulty. The example 「彼女は失敗への恐れを少しずつ克服した。」 is translated as “She gradually overcame her fear of failure.” Fear of failure is gradually overcome. Preserve the degree expressed by 少しずつ rather than turning it into immediate, complete resolution.

The example 「技術上の課題を克服するため、設計を見直した。」 is translated as “We reviewed the design to overcome the technical challenge.” The design is reviewed for the purpose of overcoming a technical challenge. Review alone does not report that the challenge has been overcome.

Resolving an unwanted condition with 解消

解消 (かいしょう) refers to resolving an unwanted condition such as a problem or worry. The example 「運動不足を解消するため毎朝歩いている。」 is translated as “I walk every morning to make up for my lack of exercise.” Walking every morning is an ongoing action intended to address lack of exercise. The purpose and action do not report that the condition is already resolved.

The example 「話し合いによって両者の誤解が解消された。」 is translated as “The misunderstanding between the two sides was resolved through discussion.” Discussion resolves the misunderstanding between the two sides. That result concerns the misunderstanding, not every other problem.

The obstacle and the condition to address

克服 focuses on overcoming fear of failure or a technical challenge. 解消 focuses on resolving lack of exercise or a misunderstanding. A problem can be described from both perspectives rather than belonging to universally exclusive categories.

Reviewing a design or walking daily is tied to a purpose. Separate those actions from the stated results of gradually overcoming fear and resolving a misunderstanding through discussion.

How do the purposes of design review and daily walking differ from the results described with 克服 for fear and 解消 for a misunderstanding?

Show the answer and why

Design review aims at overcoming a challenge, and walking aims at addressing lack of exercise. Neither action alone reports completed resolution. The other examples report gradually overcoming fear and a misunderstanding resolved through discussion. Read the target, purpose, and result together.
