故意 and 意図: deliberate action and intended purpose

Distinguish whether an action was deliberate from what it was intended to achieve. Compare 故意 and 意図, preserving the scope of the denial in the vase example and the purpose behind an arrangement.

What the denial of deliberate action covers

故意 (こい) concerns whether an action was intentional or deliberate. means “He did not break the vase intentionally.” The denial concerns doing it deliberately; translating it as “He did not break the vase” would change the scope of the denial.

means “The player received a warning because it was judged a deliberate foul.” The example links a judgment about deliberate conduct to a warning. It does not make every use of 故意 a reference to a foul or an unlawful act.

The purpose behind a question or arrangement

意図 (いと) concerns an intention or purpose. means “I did not understand the purpose of the question, so I asked for clarification.” The purpose is unclear; the sentence is not a denial that the question was asked deliberately.

means “This arrangement is intended to organize the flow of people.” The intended purpose is stated explicitly. Having that purpose does not establish that the arrangement has already achieved it.

Two questions that can apply to one action

For 故意, ask whether the action was done deliberately; for 意図, ask what it was meant to achieve. A deliberate action can also have a purpose, so these perspectives are not mutually exclusive. Keep deliberate conduct and the content of a purpose as separate questions.

Avoid equating 故意 with malice in every context or 意図 with a good purpose in every context. In particular, denying deliberate action is not the same as denying the event itself. Check what the negation covers and what purpose the sentence actually states.

be understood as “He did not break the vase”?

Show the answer and why

No. That removes the focus on deliberate action and denies the event itself. The example denies that he broke it intentionally. 故意 focuses on whether an action was deliberate, while 意図 addresses what purpose an action has.
