喫茶 and 飲酒: tea-drinking customs and drinking alcohol

Read an old tea-drinking custom, a room where tea can be enjoyed, and alcohol drinking in stated restrictions. Keep the activities and the venue’s scope in view.

A custom studied and an activity available

「茶道史の授業で昔の喫茶の習慣を学んだ。」 means “In a class on the history of tea culture, we learned about old tea-drinking customs.” 昔の喫茶の習慣 is an old tea-drinking custom studied in class. The custom concerns the activity, rather than a habit of operating a café.

「宿には読書と喫茶を楽しめる静かな部屋がある。」 means “The lodging has a quiet room for reading and enjoying tea.” The quiet room provides a setting where reading and tea drinking can be enjoyed. 喫茶 names the activity available there without reporting that a guest has already used the room.

Alcohol drinking and a restriction inside a venue

「飲酒した後は車を運転してはいけない。」 means “Do not drive after drinking alcohol.” 飲酒した後 places drinking before the driving mentioned in the example. Read the activity and the sentence’s restriction without adding age, alcohol-quantity, or other external criteria.

「会場内での飲酒は禁止されている。」 means “Alcohol consumption is prohibited inside the venue.” 会場内での limits the drinking restriction to the inside of the venue. The sentence does not extend that same prohibition to every place outside it.

Use the activity named in the actual context

喫茶 has the senses of tea drinking and café. In these two examples, it names the tea-drinking custom studied in class and the activity available at the lodging.

The 喫茶 examples describe a custom learned about and an available activity. The 飲酒 examples name alcohol drinking within the stated restrictions. Following those activities and scopes does not require adding locations or new use rules.
