記録 and 記憶: records and memory
Distinguish an external record from a person's memory.
Keeping an external record
記録 (きろく) is a record kept by writing or storing events or figures. 「会議の内容を記録しました」 says that the speaker recorded the meeting's content. Context determines whether this was through notes, audio, or another method.
「記録を残してください」 requests that a record be kept. It neither announces an existing record nor instructs someone to memorize it.
What remains in memory
記憶 (きおく) refers to memory or what is remembered. 「その日のことは記憶にありません」 says that the speaker has no memory of that day. It does not prove that the event never occurred.
「記憶がはっきりしません」 says that the memory is unclear. This differs in degree from not remembering anything at all.
Checking one against the other
「記憶と記録が違うので、確認します」 says that the speaker will check because the memory and record differ. Do not automatically treat the record as correct or the memory as wrong; compare the details.
「記録を見て思い出しました」 means remembering after looking at a record. It presents an external record as the trigger for recalling something.
Does 「記録に残っていません」 mean nobody remembers it?
Show the answer and why
No. It means that no record remains. Whether someone remembers it is separate.
