企業 and 商業: a company as actor and commerce as a field

Compare a company’s student tour and technology with a map-based study of commerce and a fictional commercial-district model. Distinguish the company unit from the activity or field.

A company acting or holding technology

企業 (きぎょう) means company or enterprise. 「地域の企業が学生向けの見学会を開いた。」 means “A local company held a tour for students.” The local company held the tour for students. The company is the actor in the sentence.

「小さな企業でも独自の技術を持っている。」 means “Even a small business has its own unique technology.” The small business possesses its own technology. This example prevents company size from becoming a rule that only large organizations count as 企業.

Commerce as the subject of study or a model

商業 (しょうぎょう) means commerce or trade. 「港の発展と商業の関係を地図で調べた。」 means “I used a map to study the relationship between the port's development and commerce.” The relationship between port development and commerce was studied using a map. Commerce is part of the subject studied rather than the company holding a tour.

「架空の商業地区に店の模型を並べた。」 means “I arranged model shops in the fictional commercial district.” The model shops were placed in a fictional district. This reports arranging models, not development of a real district or a demonstrated economic effect.

Separate the company unit from the field

企業 identifies a company that acts or holds technology; 商業 identifies a field considered in a study or represented in a model. A company can relate to commercial activity while remaining a different unit from the field itself.

In the tour example, identify who holds the event. In the map example, identify which relationship is studied. The relevant distinction is the actor and field in the sentence rather than the company’s size or the number of model shops.

How do the local 企業 holding a student tour and 商業 in the map study differ as a company actor and a field of activity?

Show the answer and why

The company is the actor holding the tour. Commerce is the field whose relationship with port development is studied. Distinguish the company unit from the field, without treating the study as proof of a particular economic effect.
