蹴る: kicking a ball and rejecting unsuitable terms

Compare a physical kick with rejecting an offer, following the object and stated reason.

The ball kicked in the garden

蹴る (ける) means kick or reject. 「弟は庭でボールを強く蹴った。」 means “My younger brother kicked the ball hard in the garden.” The younger brother kicked the ball hard in the garden.

ボールを identifies a physical object; no goal or match victory is mentioned.

The offer rejected because of its terms

「条件が合わず、彼はその申し出を蹴った。」 means “The terms did not suit him, so he rejected the offer.” The rejected object is an offer whose terms did not suit him.

その申し出を identifies the offer, and the terms supply the stated reason.

Let the object guide the reading

With the ball, 蹴った describes a kick; with the offer, it describes rejection.

The rejection does not report a physical kick, anger, rudeness, or another completed agreement.

Does 蹴った about the offer mean an object was physically kicked?

Show the answer and why

No. That example reports rejection because the terms did not suit him. Its object differs from the ball in the younger brother's example.
