研究 and 調査: research and investigation

Explore research aimed at deeper understanding and investigation that gathers facts.

Investigating for deeper understanding

研究 (けんきゅう) means systematic research into a subject. 「日本語の歴史を研究しています」 says that the speaker is researching the history of Japanese.

「研究の成果を発表しました」 means presenting research findings. Distinguish ongoing research from communicating its results.

Gathering facts and data

調査 (ちょうさ) means investigating facts or conditions. 「利用者を対象に調査を行いました」 says that a study of users was conducted. Context determines the method.

「調査中なので、まだ結論は出せません」 means that no conclusion can yet be drawn because the investigation is ongoing.

An investigation within research

「研究のために現地調査をしました」 means conducting a field investigation for research. 調査 can form one stage of 研究 rather than being its opposite.

An investigation can be systematic, and research also collects data. Rather than assuming one is always harder or longer, examine its purpose and output.

Are the two activities identical in 「調査結果を研究に使いました」?
