雷 and 霧: thunder sounds and foggy visibility

Distinguish an audible phenomenon from one that blocks the view.

Hearing thunder

雷 (かみなり) refers to thunder and lightning phenomena. 「雷が鳴っています」 says thunder is rumbling.

「遠くで雷の音が聞こえました」 says thunder was audible in the distance. It gives no exact numerical distance.

A foggy scene

霧 (きり) means fog. 「山に霧がかかっています」 says fog covers the mountain.

「霧で橋が見えません」 says the bridge cannot be seen because of fog. It does not say the bridge disappeared.

Causes and conditions

「霧が晴れて、橋が見えました」 says the fog cleared and the bridge became visible. 見えました reports that visible result.

「雷が鳴ったら、練習を中止します」 sets a condition: practice will stop if thunder sounds. It does not establish a cancellation that already happened.

Does 「霧で橋が見えません」 say the bridge disappeared?

Show the answer and why

No. It says fog prevents the bridge from being seen.
