Physical bridges and figurative connections
Compare bridge construction across a river and a wooden bridge with research aimed at linking two fields and activities connecting two towns through exchange. Follow the construction start, research aim, past action, and present description.
Bridge words and what they connect
架橋 (かきょう) means bridge construction or bridging, and 架ける (かける) appears with the meanings build or span. The examples cover physical bridges across a river or stream and figurative links between two fields or between two towns through exchange. Identify what is connected to distinguish a physical bridge from a figurative one.
means “Construction began on a bridge linking the two banks of the river.” 結ぶため gives the construction’s purpose, and 始まった marks its start. Starting construction does not establish a finished bridge or a completed connection between the banks.
A wooden bridge built and research as an aim
means “The villagers built a wooden bridge across the stream.” 架けた is the past form of 架ける, and 木の橋 is a physical bridge. Distinguish this past building action from the example that states only the start of 架橋工事.
means “We aim to conduct research that bridges the two fields.” The objects connected by 架橋する are the two fields, and 目指している expresses an aim. It does not establish that the fields have already merged or been integrated.
Activities building a bridge of exchange
means “The young people's activities build a bridge of exchange between the two towns.” 活動 is the subject and 交流の橋 the object. Read the figurative connection of exchange without replacing it with completed construction of a physical bridge.
The river banks in 架橋工事 and the wooden bridge across the stream in 架けた belong to physical bridges. The two fields in 架橋する研究 and the exchange linked by 架ける belong to figurative connections. Keep those targets alongside construction starting, research being an aim, the past bridge-building action, and the activities described in the present.
What is connected in 「二つの分野を架橋する」 and 「交流の橋を架ける」, and how do those examples differ from the wooden bridge in the 架けた sentence?
Show the answer and why
The research aims to connect two fields, while the activities are described as building a bridge of exchange between two towns. The 架けた example describes villagers building a physical wooden bridge across a stream in the past. An aim does not establish achieved integration, and a bridge of exchange does not establish completed physical construction.
