Household chores and meal preparation
Compare the broad scope of household chores with meal preparation. Follow shared family chores, finished morning chores, cooking duty at a mountain hut, and washing dishes afterward.
家事 as household chores
, all family members share the chores. The word groups household tasks into a broad activity that people divide among themselves.
, the speaker finished the morning chores while listening to music. 済ませた marks completion, but the individual chores are not listed.
炊事 as meal preparation
炊事(すいじ) means cooking or meal preparation. , the person on duty handles cooking at the mountain hut. 炊事 names the activity that person is responsible for.
, the speaker washed pots and dishes thoroughly after preparing the meal. Meal preparation and the washing that follows appear in a clear time sequence.
Comparing the scope of the activities
家事 broadly groups household chores, while 炊事 focuses on preparing meals. Meal preparation can be part of household work, but 炊事 does not expand to mean every household task.
The mountain-hut example also places 炊事 outside a private home. In the washing example, 炊事の後 distinguishes the later washing from the meal preparation, so that sequence does not make 炊事 a name for all chores.
Does 炊事 cover all household chores in the same way as 家事?
Show the answer and why
炊事 focuses on cooking or meal preparation. 家事 is the broader name for household chores, so the two activities do not have the same scope.
