解凍: Thawing food and decompressing a file

Compare 解凍 applied to frozen fish with 解凍 applied to a compressed file whose contents are then checked. Follow the object to distinguish food thawing from data decompression.

解凍 applied to fish

「冷凍した魚を冷蔵庫でゆっくり解凍した。」 — “I slowly thawed the frozen fish in the refrigerator.” The object is 冷凍した魚. 解凍 means thawing that frozen fish, and 冷蔵庫で gives the location used in this example.

ゆっくり describes the manner of this thawing. Read the particular fish and the stated location without turning the sentence into a processing condition for every food.

解凍 applied to a file

「受け取った圧縮ファイルを解凍して中身を確認した。」 — “I decompressed the file I received and checked its contents.” 圧縮ファイルを makes the meaning data decompression. 中身を確認した then reports checking the file’s contents.

Decompressing a file does not mean physically thawing fish or dismantling an object into parts. The file expression and the action of checking its contents establish the context.

The object selects the meaning

冷凍した魚 and 圧縮ファイル are different objects of 解凍. In the food example, read thawing; in the compressed-file example, read data decompression.

Checking 中身 does not establish that all information in the file is correct or complete. Preserve the stated checking action without adding an unstated validation result.

What does 解凍 mean in 「受け取った圧縮ファイルを解凍して中身を確認した」?

Show the answer and why

It means decompressing the compressed file. 圧縮ファイル is the object, so this is not thawing food. Checking the file’s contents follows the decompression.
