住所 and 場所: addresses and places

Distinguish an address used for mail or registration from a location or meeting place.

Writing and giving an address

住所 is read じゅうしょ and refers to an address, such as a home's or office's address. 「この欄に住所を書いてください」 asks someone to write the address in this field.

「住所が変わりました」 says that the address has changed. It does not say that a change notification or mail-forwarding arrangement has been completed.

Referring to a location

場所 is read ばしょ and refers to where something happens or someone or something is located. 「待ち合わせの場所を決めました」 means that the speaker decided on a meeting place.

「荷物を置く場所がありません」 means that there is no place to put the baggage. 住所 cannot replace 場所 when discussing available space this way.

Different information within one building

「住所は分かりますが、入口の場所が分かりません」 says that the speaker knows the address but not the location of the entrance. Knowing a building's address differs from knowing exactly where to enter.

Sending a package normally requires an address, while meeting inside a station benefits from a location such as an exit or ticket gate. Match the type and precision of information to the request.

Must you always give a street address in response to 「場所を教えてください」?

Show the answer and why

No. Depending on context, a location such as 「駅の東口です」 may be sufficient. If the request requires an exact mailing address, check and provide the 住所.
