順位 and 順番: ranking and an ordered turn
Compare competition ranking with numbered cards and the next presentation turn, distinguishing achievement-based placing from order even when numbers appear.
順位 (じゅんい): relative placing by performance
「競技が終わり、掲示板に順位が出た。」 (“After the contest, the rankings appeared on the board.”) The posted information is the competition ranking. If no individual place is supplied, do not invent a participant's rank.
「速さだけでなく正確さも順位に影響する。」 (“Accuracy as well as speed affects the ranking.”) Speed and accuracy affect that ranking. Their mention does not establish an exclusive calculation formula or a table assigning superiority.
順番 (じゅんばん): card order and a presentation turn
「カードを番号の順番に並べた。」 (“I arranged the cards in numerical order.”) The cards are arranged by number. Numbered order does not give the cards a performance ranking.
「次は妹が発表する順番です。」 (“It is my younger sister's turn to present next.”) The younger sister has the next presentation turn. Who presents next and who achieved a higher competition result are separate information.
Identify the function of the number
順位 concerns relative placing by performance, while 順番 concerns arrangement or a turn to act. Neither a card number nor the next turn should be transferred directly into a performance rank.
An ordered process or route also has a different focus. In these examples, identify whether the sentence names placing, card arrangement, or presentation order.
Does the younger sister having the next presentation 順番 mean she holds the next-highest 順位?
Show the answer and why
No. It is a turn to present, not a performance placing. Numbered card order is also different from competition ranking.
