冗談 and 誇張: joking intent and exaggerated degree

Compare the intent of a joke with the degree of overstatement, preserving tentative wording and negation without guaranteeing laughter.

A joke’s intent and the stated reaction

「彼の冗談で重い雰囲気が和らいだ。」 says that his joke eased the heavy atmosphere. The change in atmosphere is stated, but an act of laughing is not.

「冗談のつもりでも人を傷つけてはいけない。」 says that even joking intent does not permit hurting others. Preserve the concession in つもりでも rather than treating intent as a guarantee of an enjoyable reaction.

Overstating a degree with 誇張

「彼の話には少し誇張が含まれているようです。」 says that his story seems to contain some exaggeration. Preserve both the limited degree in 少し and the tentative wording in ようです.

「商品の特徴を誇張せず、事実だけを説明しました。」 describes explaining only facts without overstating the product’s features. 誇張せず is negative, so the occurrence of the word does not describe exaggeration being performed.

Intent and degree can overlap

冗談 focuses on joking intent, while 誇張 focuses on overstating the degree of content. A joke can contain exaggeration, but not every exaggeration is a joke.

Read intent and degree separately, retaining the stated response, uncertainty, and negation. The product example concerns how features were described rather than establishing a particular product’s effectiveness or quality.

What do joking intent and a statement that a story seems slightly exaggerated concern? Does explaining features with 誇張せず describe exaggeration?

Show the answer and why

冗談 concerns joking intent, while 誇張 concerns the degree of overstatement. ようです keeps the story example tentative, and 誇張せず states that the explanation did not exaggerate. Joking intent alone also does not guarantee laughter.
